Geomapping BCS Events

map of BCS Member Events March 2011As an experiment, I have uploaded all the known member group events held in March 2011 into a Google Calendar.

Using the GCM (Google Calendar Map) tool from http://chadnorwood.com/projects/gcm/, these events can be displayed by date range on an interactive zoomable map.

Notes

  1. The google calendar from which the events map is generated had to be hand-uploaded from a spreadsheet maintained by the Member Groups Team because I have been unable to find a way to export data from the  BCS Events Calendar.
  2. Be aware that only Member Groups from March 2011 are currently available to be plotted in this proof-concept demo.
  3. The addresses of many of the events had to be hand-tuned into a form that allowed the code to put the markers in the correct places on the map.
  4. In the best of all possible worlds, the events map would take a live feed from the BCS events database and so be always uptodate.
  5. The address range handling of the GCM code may not be not fault-free. I have observed some strange results when changing the date range. I hope this at least can be fixed.

Convention Good News

Here’s the presentation given by James Anderson, Chair of Berkshire Branch, at the Member Groups Convention in April: James Anderson at the Royal Society.

(video severely downsized to save bandwidth)

James talks about changes he has introduced to the way the branch committee works, and how he has implemented lots of good ideas picked up from last year’s Convention, including use of the BCS virtual offices in Second Life for committee meetings.
